There are two kinds of metal coating. Initially one normally known as moly-blacks, molybdenum is the principal component of the layer. Such layers are often applied electrolytically. In the 2nd kind, molybdenum functions as an accelerator or promoter for finishings consisting mostly of various other ingredients. Several of the so-called iron phosphate-type pre-paint treatments belong to this class.
